D&D Daily has published their “Retail Violent Death Report” for the second quarter and midyear of 2018 and the results are startling. To match the increasing dollar amounts since the passage of higher standards for felony theft, retail environments have been experiencing increasing levels of violence.
Since midyear of 2017, there has been a 6.2% increase in the incidence of violent deaths in retail, with 239 deaths in 2018. The incidence of violence has stayed flat over the second quarter of 2018 with heavy violence from earlier in Q1 driving up the midyear violent incidence rate. From January 2017 to January 2018 there were 464 reported violent retail deaths with customers, associates and LP/LE members making up 67% of recorded deaths, with the remaining 33% are suspects.
